What is Site Safety Training?

Site Safety Training (SST) is a mandatory requirement for construction workers in New York City. It is aimed at improving safety awareness and reducing accidents on construction sites. The program was introduced by the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) as part of the City’s commitment to implementing safe practices on construction sites and protecting personnel from accidents.

The key components of SST include:

  1. Training Requirements: Workers must complete a certain number of hours of safety training to earn their SST card. This includes courses like the OSHA 10-Hour and OSHA 30-Hour courses, along with other specific safety training relevant to their job.
  2. SST Card: The SST card is a certification that proves the worker has met the required safety training. It’s required for all construction workers and supervisors in NYC.
  3. Training Topics: The training covers various safety topics, including hazard recognition, fall protection, scaffold safety, and emergency procedures, among others.

It is important to remember that the requirement for SST cards applies to both workers and supervisors, with different training hour requirements depending on their role.

How To Get An SST Card

To obtain an SST (Site Safety Training) card in New York City, both workers and supervisors must meet specific training requirements. Here’s a breakdown of the necessary hours of training for each:

1. For Workers:

  • OSHA 10-Hour Course: All workers must complete the OSHA 10-Hour Construction Course as part of their training.
  • Additional Training Requirements: In addition to the OSHA 10-Hour course, workers need 30 additional hours of approved safety training to meet the total SST card requirement.
    • This additional training can be fulfilled through various courses that are NYC DOB-approved, covering topics like fall protection, scaffolding, and hazard communication, among others.

Total for Workers:

  • 40 hours of training (including the OSHA 10-Hour course) to qualify for an SST card.

2. For Supervisors:

  • OSHA 30-Hour Course: Supervisors are required to complete the OSHA 30-Hour Construction Course.
  • Additional Training Requirements: After completing the OSHA 30-Hour course, supervisors need an additional 30 hours of approved safety training.
    • This includes similar courses covering safety regulations, hazard awareness, and other relevant topics.

Total for Supervisors:

  • 60 hours of training (including the OSHA 30-Hour course) to qualify for an SST card.

By meeting these training requirements, both workers and supervisors will be able to receive their official SST card, demonstrating their knowledge of the safety standards and regulations required for working on NYC construction sites.

For Workers:

  • Refresher Course Hours: Workers who have already completed their initial OSHA 10-Hour Construction Course are required to complete 8 hours of additional safety training every 5 years to maintain their SST card.
  • These refresher courses may cover a range of topics, including hazard recognition, fall protection, and the latest updates on safety procedures and regulations.

For Supervisors:

  • Refresher Course Hours: Supervisors who have already completed the OSHA 30-Hour Construction Course must complete 16 hours of additional safety training every 5 years to keep their SST card active.
  • The refresher training for supervisors will generally focus on more advanced topics like site-specific safety plans, safety management, and supervisory responsibilities in maintaining a safe construction site.
